Kiwanis Shoe Drive – Donate shoes & help out others!
January – March 2018
Did you know that Tetanus is a serious cause of death in 3rd world countries? When an expectant mother gets the tetanus in her blood from going barefoot, she passes it on to the baby – who dies an excruciating death within days of being born. One way tetanus can be prevented is by wearing shoes! Here’s a chance to help out the poor and also the youth in our community. Kiwanis of Pratt is conducting a Shoe Collection Drive from January through March. The shoes will be donated to third world countries (Haiti, Honduras, and other nations in Central America and Africa). Kiwanis will receive a small payment for the shoes which will in turn be donated to youth programs (the Teen Center, Pre-school Teachers, Builders Club @ LMS, K-Kids at Skyline and Aktion Club at Arrowhead West). The shoe drive helps impoverished people in two ways. (1) Practical shoes are given to the poor (tennis shoes, flip flops, sandals, hiking boots, etc) and (2) They help those who want a better life start and grow a business in their country by becoming a street Shoe Vendor. A number of dress shoes and new shoes are given to individuals to start a trade. Once their business is growing, they can come back and buy shoes for a small fee. ) IT’S A WIN WIN FOR everyone involved. Our goal is to collect 100 bags of shoes (25 pair per bag) during this period. PLEASE CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS AND DONATE IF YOU ARE ABLE! A box for the shoes will be located in the PRMC cafeteria, schools, the Community Center, the Pratt Rec Department, and in some of the churches. If you have questions or need shoes to be picked up call Stephanie Becker 450-1425 or 672-6725 or another Kiwanis Member.
